Yanni Hufnagel’s Impact on College Hoops

Any successful college basketball program you can find is certain to have good assistant head coaches. Assistants do a large amount of scouting, recruiting and player development. Few assistant head coaches have made the impact in recent years that Yanni Hufnagel has made. A native of Scarsdale, New York, Hufnagel has experience as a player, commentator, and coach. He has built an incredible reputation for his ability to recruit and develop players.


Yanni Hufnagel spends several years as an assistant at Harvard University. Working under Duke star Tommy Amaker, Hufnagel led the Crimson to four straight twenty-win seasons. The Crimson was also able to go to multiple NCAA tournaments during this time. Hufnagel was able to help the team to win three straight conference titles in the Ivy League. It was also during this time that Hufnagel began to get national attention as a recruiter from major groups like CBS Sports and ESPN.


After Harvard Yanni Hufnagel moved to Vanderbilt University. He continued to excel as a recruiter and player developer. During the 2014 season, Vanderbilt had the 30th ranked recruiting class according to ESPN and Rivals. Two big names from that class are Matthew Fisher-Davis and Wade Baldwin IV. That same year Yanni was invited to a major conference consisting of top assistant coaches and other executives. The Nike sponsored event was focused on developing future leaders for the sport.


Yanni’s resume consists of working with a number of top names. He has worked under well-respected head coaches like Cuonzo Martin and Kevin Stallings. He played a major role in the development of current NBA All-Star Blake Griffin. The list of college players he has recruited includes current Boston Celtic rising star Jaylen Brown. Hufnagel has become recognized nationwide for his skill set. He appears set to be a leader in college sports for some time to come.
